Jan Dirven was a Flemish painter active in seventeenth-century Antwerp who died in 1653. His work belongs to the still-life tradition, with a particular interest in fish and the products of fishing. Recent research places his practice in the wake of Alexander Adriaenssen. The small group of pictures attributed to him reveals close attention to different species, material surfaces and the arrangement of objects within a composition.
His paintings sometimes combine fish with equipment, animals and plants. The recurring presence of frogbit has been studied as a distinguishing motif. A study published in 2022 also proposes proverbial and social interpretations of particular details, including a cat coveting the catch. These remain scholarly proposals, demonstrating how still life can connect precise description with cultural meanings and potential contemporary allusions.
