Elizabeth Newman

Born : 1952Documented citizenships : Australia

Elizabeth Newman, born in Melbourne in 1962, trained at the Victorian College of the Arts during the 1980s. She began exhibiting in 1985 and participated in Gertrude Contemporary’s studio programme in 1985–1986. Her practice encompasses painting, drawing and installation, questioning relationships between subjective experience and social constructs.

Her abstract works examine conventions of modernist painting without seeking impersonal perfection. Surface irregularities and simple gestures make the image’s construction perceptible. In Untitled of 1987, held by the Monash University Museum of Art, a yellow rectangle interacts with a blue field whose variations unsettle spatial depth. The monograph More than What There Is, published in 2013, accompanied recognition of a practice attentive to tensions between form, perception and meaning within the experience of art.

This profile brings together identity references for Elizabeth Newman and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
