Gustavo Simoni trained in Rome with Dario Querci and Francesco Podesti. An early member of the Roman Society of Watercolourists in 1875, he made watercolour one of his means of expression alongside oil painting. His travels took him to France, Spain and North Africa, and he spent several years in Tlemcen. Caravans, streets, souks, carpet merchants and musicians formed his Orientalist repertoire. Caravane au repos, for example, depicts Kabyle travellers in an encampment. Towards the end of the nineteenth century he opened a Paris studio, later founding a school of Orientalist painting upon returning to Rome. He also painted imaginary reconstructions of scenes from ancient Rome and the seventeenth century.
This profile brings together identity references for Gustavo Simoni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
