Born in 1959, Simon English studied at London's Central School of Arts. He came to attention on the London art scene in 1994 through Young British Art III at the Saatchi Gallery. His practice combines painting, drawing and collage, with works on paper in widely varying sizes occupying a central place.
His images mingle references to poetry, literature and music with autobiographical allusions. Fairy-tale figures, unsettling portraits and unexpected associations create a world where seduction and unease coexist. Drawing becomes a space for exploring memories, desires and the unconscious. In 2018, Smile Please at Peer in London highlighted his work; in 2020, the Transpalette in Bourges brought together drawings, sculptures and paintings, demonstrating the breadth of his artistic practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Simon English and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
