The figurative painter Roger Montané, born in Bordeaux in 1916 and deceased in Castelmaurou in 2002, combined academic training with a practice shaped by observing everyday life. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, completing his studies there in 1939 with a first prize in drawing from the antique. He grew up between Foix and Toulouse before attending André Lhote’s studio or academy on rue d’Odessa in Montparnasse, Paris. Biographies also mention his meetings with François Desnoyer and, according to one of them, with André Lhote and Marc Saint-Saëns. His travels took him notably to Austria, Italy, Venice and Prague in 1948, and then to the Netherlands in 1951.

Markets, fairs, popular festivals and street scenes are among the preferred subjects of his painting. Working from the motif continued in the studio, where Montané developed his final compositions.

His first recorded solo exhibition was held in 1949 at the Galerie de Berri in Paris. A presentation at Adams Gallery in London is noted for the period 1952–1966. In 1958, during a stay in Japan, he exhibited at the Bridgestone Museum in Tokyo; an exhibition at the Maison de la Pensée française in Paris is also recorded for 1961. In 1964, he exhibited in Chicago, New York, London and Frankfurt. In 1974, he took part in the Tehran International Biennial with the Salon d’automne group. A retrospective of his work was presented at the Musée Goya in Castres in 1984. His work was also the subject of a publication by Pierre de Boisdeffre, published by Pierre Cailler in Geneva in 1959.
