Born in Quimper and deceased in Paris, Léon Joubert (1851–1928) devoted much of his painting to landscape. He trained with Léon Germain Pelouse and Fernand Cormon and is associated with the Barbizon school. Riverbanks, ponds and towns seen beside the water recur among his subjects, bringing architectural features into a practice grounded in the natural setting. Brittany also has a place in this body of work: his snowy view of the road to Rustéphan, dated 1890, is recorded at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper. Views of Chinon and Saint-Malo broaden its geographical range and demonstrate his sustained interest in the meeting of water, landscape and the built environment.
This profile brings together identity references for Leon Joubert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
