Peter van de Velde

Born : 1634

Peter van den Velde, also known as Pieter van de Velde, was a Flemish marine painter born in Antwerp in 1634. He became a master of the city’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1654, working within a market for cabinet pictures and seascapes. His subjects included harbours, ships and turbulent seas. A possible relationship to the celebrated Dutch Van de Velde family remains unproven.

Shipping Off a Rocky Coast, in Greenwich, is a small oil painting on copper. Its vessels confront choppy water amid pronounced contrasts of light and colour. Ships at Anchor Off a Mediterranean Harbour creates a different atmosphere. A large Dutch vessel dominates a bay suffused with golden light. Its Mediterranean setting belongs to an imagined coastal world rather than a securely identified geographical location.

This profile brings together identity references for Peter van de Velde and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
