German painter, draughtsman and etcher Johann Georg von Dillis pursued a career combining artistic practice with responsibilities in the Bavarian collections. After studying philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest in 1782 and also attended classes at the Munich Academy.
He left the priesthood in 1786 and then gave private lessons at court and to aristocratic families. In 1790, he became inspector of the Picture Gallery at Hofgarten. His career was also marked by numerous journeys to Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France. As director of the Royal Galleries of Bavaria, he organised the Munich Pinakothek, which opened in 1836.
The works mentioned include several landscapes of his native community: a view of the village of Giebing, the forester’s house and views of forests, all dated 1793. These are joined by Harlaching Tower (1796) and a View of St Peter’s in Rome (1818), which attest to the range of places depicted in the recorded works. An auction notice also describes a Gebirgslandschaft mit einem See as an oil on wood measuring 15 × 17 cm. A catalogue of the paintings in the Royal Pinakothek in Munich, published simultaneously in German and French, appeared in 1845 and comprises 348 pages.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Georg von Dillis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
