SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Painter, draughtsman, graphic artist, goldsmith, engraver and illustrator, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein is also known by the nickname “Goethe-Tischbein”. Born on 15 February 1751 in Haina, he belonged to the Tischbein family, which included Johann Heinrich Tischbein (1722–1789) and his uncle Johann Jacob Tischbein (1725–1791), among others. His nickname is associated with the portrait of Goethe painted in Rome in 1787, Goethe in the Roman Campagna, now held at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main.
In Montpellier, the Musée Fabre also holds a preparatory drawing for the portrait of Goethe, bequeathed to it in 1837 by François-Xavier Fabre, who founded the museum. Other works mentioned include the Portrait of Lady Charlotte Campbell, The Duck Family and the Fox Family, and Diogenes in Search of an Honest Man. A Lempertz lot description attributes to Tischbein the drawing Ameisenbärkopf, executed in pencil, measuring 20.5 × 33 cm, and states that it bears an inscription on the reverse.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
