Leonid Pasternak (1862–1945), born in Odessa, studied drawing in his native city and subsequently at the Munich Academy. Settling in Moscow, he taught at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1894 to 1921. His marriage to the pianist Rosalia Kaufman placed family life within a circle of writers, painters and musicians. He was Boris Pasternak’s father, but his artistic career followed its own independent course.
A portraitist and illustrator, he worked on Leo Tolstoy’s Resurrection. His rapid drawings capture gestures and poses, often within the intimacy of family life. MoMA holds his etching depicting Lovis Corinth, an example of his printmaking. After moving to Berlin in 1921, he went to England in 1938 and spent his final years in Oxford.
This profile brings together identity references for Leonid Pasternak and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
