Jan van Noordt worked as a painter, draughtsman and printmaker in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. His subjects include biblical narratives, ancient history and family groups. The Agnes Etherington Art Centre relates the expressive figures and exotic landscape of Hagar and Ishmael in the Wilderness, painted in 1671, to Flemish pictorial models.
The Continence of Scipio, signed and dated 1672 and held by the Rijksmuseum, depicts the general reuniting a captive with her fiancé amid advisers and soldiers. Family Group with a Lamb addresses a different subject, showing a couple and two children drawn in black and white chalk on grey-blue paper. Landscape with Cattle and Milkmaid of 1644, in the Metropolitan Museum, is an etching with drypoint executed after Pieter van Laer rather than an independently invented composition.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan van Noordt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
