Gustave Lorain entered the École des beaux-arts in Paris in 1898, studying with teachers including Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Grasset and Ferdinand Humbert. From 1902, his contributions to the Salon des artistes français presented a practice encompassing landscape, portraiture and the nude. The human figure remained a point of departure for compositions that also addressed mythological and allegorical subjects. From 1921 he extended this work by creating designs for the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. Decorating large vases allowed him to transpose his figurative explorations onto ceramics and into a different relationship with space. An overview of his work at the 1935 Salon brought together the stages of a career connecting easel painting and decorative art.
