Johannes van der Bent, born in Amsterdam around 1650 and deceased in 1690, was a Dutch seventeenth-century painter specialising in landscapes populated by shepherds and animals. Early biographical accounts describe him as a pupil of Philips Wouwerman and Adriaen van de Velde. This traditional attribution of teachers should be distinguished from a securely reconstructed account of his training, which remains difficult to establish in detail.
His compositions belong to the Italianate landscape tradition, particularly associated with Nicolaes Berchem. Herds, pastoral figures and buildings organise an idealised countryside. The Bavarian State Painting Collections preserve two Italian landscapes with cattle, one incorporating an ancient ruin and a monastery church. Such pictures place his work within a tradition combining the depiction of animals with imagined southern settings and carefully arranged pastoral scenes.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes van der Bent and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
