Isaac Levitan, who was born in 1860 and died in 1900, studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, including under Alexei Savrasov and Vasily Polenov. His landscapes give a central place to changing light and the emotions aroused by nature. Golden Autumn. Slobodka, painted in 1889 and held by the Russian Museum, shows a young birch retaining its foliage among peasant plots.
On the Lake, of 1893, belongs to Saratov’s Radishchev Museum. Evening light is reflected in still water, rendered through broad brushstrokes and an asymmetrical composition. Lake, a large canvas of 1899–1900 in the Russian Museum, grew from studies made in central Russia. This late synthesis transforms an observed motif into an expansive landscape while preserving the freedom and freshness of its painted surface.
This profile brings together identity references for Isaac Levitan and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
