Leopold Fertbauer (1802–1875) was an Austrian painter whose life and work were closely linked to Vienna. His training at the Academy of Fine Arts is documented between 1816 and 1828. Portraiture became a central field of his practice, encompassing both individual sitters and family groups within the context of Biedermeier painting. Clothing, accessories and interiors locate his subjects in their social surroundings. The Wien Museum preserves depictions of a middle-class married couple and the imperial family, demonstrating the range of this activity. Female portraits on panel also document his work on a smaller scale. The individual and the setting of everyday life therefore emerge as complementary concerns in his approach to painted likenesses.
