Auguste-Émile Pinchart, born in Cambrai in 1842, was a French painter, draughtsman and lithographer. A pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme, he began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1864. His genre scenes, often inspired by eighteenth-century life, also supplied the print market. Marriage to Léontine-Ernestine Grisi, daughter of the dancer Carlotta Grisi, established links with Geneva, where he lived alongside his activities in Paris.
Working under the name Atelier Pinchart, he produced lithographic posters and prints. His poster for the Swiss National Exhibition of 1896 forms part of this graphic practice, represented in Geneva’s Museum of Art and History. He later settled in Tunisia, painting landscapes, portraits and local scenes. His career thus brought together Salon painting, illustration and poster design across France, Switzerland and North Africa.
This profile brings together identity references for Auguste Émile Pinchart and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
