Jan Brueghel the Elder, born in Brussels in 1568 and deceased in Antwerp in 1625, belonged to a major family of Flemish painters. The son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, he worked in Italy before returning to Antwerp in 1596. Cardinal Federico Borromeo was among his patrons. His landscapes, flower pieces and small history paintings display close observation, often on wooden panels or copper plates.
In Wooded Landscape with Abraham and Isaac, painted in 1599 and preserved in Tokyo, the biblical narrative unfolds within an extensive forest. Abraham rides a donkey while Isaac carries wood for the sacrifice. Brueghel also collaborated with Rubens and Joos de Momper. Country Life in the Prado, made with Momper, combines landscape and agricultural activities, continuing themes explored by his father.
