The French painter Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange, born and deceased in Paris, situated her work within Neo-Impressionism. Flowers and gardens hold a prominent place in her painting. Sources describe a practice using lively strokes and also associate her with Pointillism.
She came from a family of artists and architects: her mother, Isabelle Toudouze, a painter and fashion illustrator, and her maternal grandmother, Adèle-Anaïs Colin Toudouze, a fashion illustrator, were part of this artistic milieu. In 1899, she married the architect and decorator Pierre Selmersheim; they had three children, Colette, Jean and Annette, born in 1900, 1904 and 1907. That same year, as she moved with her husband into the Castel Béranger in Auteuil, she met Paul Signac. The two couples became friends and, after the Selmersheims left the Signacs’ building in 1904, continued to see one another, notably during stays at La Hune, Signac’s property in Saint-Tropez. Paul Signac became her partner in 1910; she divorced Pierre Selmersheim in 1912.
She began exhibiting on her own in 1901, the year the Galerie Charles Hessèle in Paris presented her work. At the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts, she exhibited with Pierre Selmersheim in 1901 and 1904 in the section for objets d’art, then in 1909 under her name alone in the decorative arts section, with lace. In 1907, she took part with him in the Salon de la Société des artistes décorateurs, where bronzes and jewellery were presented. She first participated in the Salon des indépendants in 1911, with three paintings. She exhibited there from 1911 to 1914, then every year from 1920 to 1939. In 1913, the Société des amis des arts de Nantes presented two works under her name: Dessus de porte. Fleurs and the watercolour Les Sables d’Olonne. The Galerie Rodrigues-Henrique in Paris devoted an exhibition to her in 1931.
