Pieter van Avont, also called Peeter, was a painter, etcher and art dealer from Mechelen. He joined Antwerp’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1622–1623 and became a citizen of the city in 1631. Figures occupy a prominent place in his historical subjects and landscapes, particularly children and small winged beings.
Putti Dancing in a Landscape in the Royal Collection, dated around 1630–1652, bears his signature. The museum assigns the figures to Van Avont while regarding the landscape as probably painted by another hand. Prints also disseminated his inventions involving children. Fire, an etching of 1647 in the Metropolitan Museum, belongs to the Four Elements series: one boy fires a cannon while two others hold pieces of armour. Wenceslaus Hollar executed the print after a design by Van Avont.
