Associated with Symbolism, and placed by sources within a field that includes Synthetism in particular, Charles Filiger developed his career between Paris and Brittany. Enrolled at the École des arts décoratifs in 1886, he entered the Académie Colarossi the following year; in 1888, he went to Pont-Aven, where he met Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier and Émile Bernard. In 1890, he left his Paris studio and settled in Le Pouldu. His family surname, Filliger, became Filiger through a simplification of its spelling.
His first documented exhibitions in Paris include two Pointillist studies at the Salon des indépendants in 1889, followed by four paintings with a Synthetist tendency at the same salon in 1890; in March 1892, he presented six gouaches there at the first Salon de la Rose-Croix. He also exhibited at the Galerie Laffitte in 1895, with Durand-Ruel in 1899 and at the Hôtel Valéry in 1900. His artistic circle included Armand Seguin and Roderic O’Conor. In 1903, he travelled to Switzerland to visit his family, then settled in Basel according to one source; in 1913, he took up residence at the Hôtel du Menhir in Trégunc, run by the Le Guellec family. He presented a further six gouaches at the Salon des indépendants in 1920.
Works are held at the musée d’Orsay and the musée des Beaux-Arts de Brest; these include La Maison du Pen-Du, a gouache on cardboard dated 1890, and Tête de jeune garçon, ink on cardboard from the same year. The musée de Pont-Aven holds Paysage rocheux, le Pouldu, listed as circa 1891, while the musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper holds Paysage du Pouldu, dated 1892. His work was the subject of an exhibition at the musée d’Art moderne de Strasbourg in 1990; in 2006, an exhibition at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper focused on his relationship with André Breton.
