Born in Matrionovka in the Kherson governorate, Ivan Pokhitonov (1850–1923) initially followed a path outside art schools. After schooling in Elisavetgrad and Nikolaev, he studied agriculture in Moscow and natural sciences in Odessa, where he also worked for a time at the State Bank. His move to Paris in 1877 marked an important stage: there he worked under the guidance of Alexei Bogoliubov. Landscape became a significant part of his practice, informed by places visited and scenes of everyday activity. In 1890, a view of the surroundings of Pau accompanied his first participation in a Peredvizhniki exhibition. Works held by the Tretyakov Gallery likewise record his interest in Pau and in washerwomen working beside the Gave river.
