Mihail Chemiakin

Born : 1943Documented citizenships : France · Russia · United States

Born in Moscow in 1943, Mikhaïl Chemiakine trained at the secondary art school attached to the Leningrad Academy, then worked at the Hermitage. He organised an exhibition there with colleagues in 1964. With philosopher Vladimir Ivanov, he formulated the principles of “Metaphysical Synthetism” in 1967. Forced into exile in 1971, he settled in France. His imagery reworks Slavic tales and folklore, shifting their figures and meanings into new contexts; memory plays an important role. The series Carnaval à Saint-Pétersbourg exemplifies this imaginative world. His practice extends to the stage and public space: in 2001, he designed a Nutcracker for the Mariinsky Theatre and the Moscow monument Children Are the Victims of Adult Vices.
