Bram Bogart, the artist name of Abraham van den Boogaart, was born in Delft in 1921. A Dutch painter who became Belgian, he was naturalised as a Belgian citizen in 1969 and died in 2012. From 1937 to 1939, he worked as a commercial artist for an advertising agency in Rotterdam. During the Second World War, he went into hiding to escape the forced labour imposed by the German army. After the liberation, in 1945, he began developing rough, wall-like landscapes built up in layers of material; his work is associated with Art Informel, which brings together diverse practices of abstraction.
Material became a structuring element of his painting: Bogart developed reinforced panels and thickened his compositions until they took on the appearance of cement. He applied the material using brushes, trowels and spatulas, making gesture and relief construction tangible components of his work. Dated 1974, Blauwenblauw bears witness to this practice through its mixed media and its 60 × 75 cm format; the gallery description notes a signature and a date on the side, as well as an inscription on the back giving the artist’s name, March 1974 and the title.
His first solo exhibition took place in London at Gimpel Fils in 1958; in 1971, he represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale. The Royal Academy of Belgium awarded him the Jules Raeymaekers Prize in 1987. His work was subsequently the subject of retrospectives at the Cobra Museum in Amsterdam in 2012, and then at the Prinsenhof Museum in Delft in 2022. Tate Modern acquired three of his works in 2014; according to Galerie Lancz, his works are also held in the public collections of the Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Guggenheim, the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou.
