Alfred Marie Le Petit, who also signed Alfred Le Petit, was the son of the caricaturist of the same name. His career encompassed painting, printmaking, decoration and humorous drawing. A pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Ferdinand Humbert, he also taught at the junior Lycée Condorcet and the École ABC in Paris. Landscape occupied an important place in his work, particularly the banks of the Seine at La Frette, alongside trees, haystacks and river scenes. This attention to everyday surroundings accompanied his activity as an illustrator, including his work for Maupassant’s Sur l’eau in 1927. His membership of committees for the Salon d’automne and Salon des humoristes reflects a career connecting several artistic communities.
