Jacob Andries Beschey (1710–1786) was a Flemish painter whose career centred on Antwerp. He became a master of the city's Guild of Saint Luke in 1727 and its dean from 1766. He worked within an artistic milieu in which the legacy of the previous century's major masters remained an important point of reference. His principal subjects were biblical and mythological, although his repertoire also included landscapes and still lifes.
His religious compositions demonstrate the continuing authority of Rubens. A Descent from the Cross signed and dated 1735 follows the celebrated model in Antwerp Cathedral. The National Gallery in Athens holds Moses Makes Water Gush from a Rock. Such works place his practice within the transmission and reinterpretation of Flemish narrative painting during the eighteenth century.
