British painter born in Plympton in 1723 and died in London in 1792, Joshua Reynolds is distinguished primarily as a portraitist. According to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, his portraits combine a formal manner derived from formal portraiture with a more intimate approach that preserves the sitter’s social dignity. Trained under the portraitist Thomas Hudson from 1740, he left his studio in 1743. His stay in Italy, from 1749 to 1752, included two years in Rome, where he studied ancient sculpture and the classical and Baroque masters. He was also interested in the art of the High Renaissance and in the works of Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck.
Together with Thomas Gainsborough, Reynolds helped to disseminate and renew in England the portrait set in a landscape. The Eliot Family, a group portrait belonging to the Eliot collection, takes the form of a conversation piece. The work owes much to Van Dyck and probably also to William Hogarth. Although he considered history painting the noblest genre, it was as a portraitist that he distinguished himself primarily.
Elected president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768, the year of its founding under the auspices of George III, he regularly exhibited his works there and gave lectures. Between 1769 and 1790, he delivered fifteen Discourses on Painting at the Academy. In 1764, he founded The Club with Samuel Johnson, a literary circle.
This profile brings together identity references for Joshua Reynolds and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
