Dirk Rafaelszoon Camphuysen (1586–1627), born in Gorinchem and deceased in Dokkum, was a Dutch painter, poet and theologian. After training as a painter, he studied theology at Leiden and worked as a teacher and preacher. His commitment to the Remonstrants led to exile. His career therefore connects artistic training, religious reflection and literary activity during the opening decades of the seventeenth century.
His Stichtelycke Rymen, published in 1624, rank among his principal writings. Prints also preserved his memory: the Rijksmuseum holds a portrait engraved by Salomon Savery after Casper Casteleyn, surrounded by personifications of Faith, Hope and Charity. This image should be distinguished from Camphuysen’s own work. It demonstrates how visual culture accompanied the reception of an author whose activity extended beyond painting into several interconnected fields.
This profile brings together identity references for Dirk Rafaelsz Camphuysen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
