Max Josef Wagenbauer develops a practice of landscape and animal painting in Bavaria. Trained in Munich under Johann Jakob Dorner the Elder, he becomes a court draughtsman in 1802 and gallery inspector in 1815. His rural images connect buildings, terrain and vegetation, moving between graphic observation, colour and printed reproduction as different approaches to a shared subject.
Landscape with a House beside a Road, at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, describes two farmhouses beneath trees in graphite. River Valley with a Farmhouse, at the Lenbachhaus, combines watercolour and pencil on a small sheet. In Landscape with Goats beside a Well, an 1823 lithograph at the Rijksmuseum, animals inhabit the setting. The print belongs to a series of models for landscape draughtsmen: observation also becomes an instrument of instruction.
