Giovanni Domenico Bossi, a native of Trieste who died in Munich in 1853, developed a European career as a miniature painter. Trained in Venice under Giandomenico Tiepolo, he worked in Stockholm, Saint Petersburg and Vienna among other cities. His Swedish visits left a lasting mark on portrait miniatures after the death of Gustav III. His likeness of John Hall the Younger, signed in 1801, belongs to these representations of local society.
Bossi adapted his practice to different formats and uses. An Unknown Woman of 1796 at the Nationalmuseum is painted in watercolour on ivory and mounted as a ring. The Tansey Collection's portrait of Alexander I, dated 1807, combines watercolour and gouache on the same material. The ruler's almost antique profile recalls Roman coins and cameos, lending official authority to an image only a few centimetres high.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Dominik Bossi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
