David Scougall

David Scougall was a Scottish portrait painter active in the second half of the seventeenth century. Accounts, signatures and attributions document a practice serving the country’s elites. He copied works by John Michael Wright, under whom he may have trained, although this is unproven. His son John also worked as a portrait painter, sometimes complicating the separation of their respective works.

The National Galleries of Scotland hold his portrait of George Gillespie, an oil on canvas dated after 1660. London’s National Portrait Gallery also owns a portrait of Archibald Campbell, first Marquess of Argyll, catalogued as a copy after Scougall. These records demonstrate the importance of distinguishing originals, attributions and repetitions, while illuminating the circulation of images of Scottish political and religious figures.

This profile brings together identity references for David Scougall and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
