Ferdinand von Rayski, also known as Louis Ferdinand von Rayski, was a German painter and draughtsman whose work includes portraiture. Hunting forms an important part of his production: he depicted individual hunters, groups, animals and their woodland surroundings. Quick sketches and more developed drawings reveal close observation of nature and prepare compositions on a larger scale.
Hunting Break in the Wermsdorf Forest, painted in 1859 and held by the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris, brings together a hunting party associated with the house of Wettin. The Albertinum compares it with his Study of the Wermsdorf Forest. The Städel holds a pencil Study for a Male Portrait, documenting another use of drawing in his practice alongside the preparations for his hunting scenes.
This profile brings together identity references for Ferdinand von Rayski and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
