Cornelis Kruys, also called Cornelis Cruys, was a Dutch still-life painter active in the middle of the seventeenth century, including in Haarlem. Documented from 1644, he belongs to the milieu of artists specialising in laid tables. Glassware, food and books provide the subjects of paintings in which domestic objects occupy the entire scene, becoming its principal theme without requiring the presence of human figures.
The Kunsthaus Zürich holds a Still Life with Berkemeyer, Books and Cheese, painted in oil on wood and acquired through Heinrich Wölfflin’s bequest in 1945. Another Still Life belongs to the Hunterian in Glasgow. The boundaries of his oeuvre remain debated: for a Berlin composition with vessels and fruit, his name is an alternative attribution, while the museum identifies Pieter Claesz and Roelof Koets as its painters.
This profile brings together identity references for Cornelis Kruys and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
