Henry Pether developed a painting of landscapes and towns by moonlight. The son of painter Abraham Pether, he belonged to a family associated with nocturnal scenes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1828 and 1862 while also pursuing technical investigations into architectural materials.
Moonlight, Westminster (1858), at the National Gallery of Victoria, emphasises the mass of Victoria Tower within the London palace complex. Night transforms a recognisable monument into a pictorial subject. In Trafalgar Square, by Moonlight, painted around 1862 and held by the London Museum, moonlight meets the gas lighting of streets and interiors. Big Ben’s illuminated clock face also contributes to the scene. Pether thus connects urban topography with the effects of several sources of light.
