Charles James Lewis, born in London in 1830 and deceased in 1892, was a British painter of domestic subjects and landscapes. He worked in oils and watercolour, exhibited regularly in London and became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1882. Scenes of everyday life and places beside the water form part of his repertoire.
British public collections preserve several examples: Two Figures in a Boat at Birmingham Museums Trust, Our Holiday at Gallery Oldham and Hurley Bridge at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. These titles evoke leisure, human presence and places for excursions. Considered together, they situate this part of his production around a familiar experience of landscape, extending beyond a purely topographical view to suggest how such places were inhabited and enjoyed.
This profile brings together identity references for Charles James Lewis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
