The Dutch painter and etcher Johannes Janson (1729–1784) depicted inhabited landscapes and rural activities. In A Formal Garden of 1766, at the Getty Museum, patterned beds organise the space before a country house. This oil on canvas connects the pleasures of the estate with signs of prosperity: one promenade leads towards farmland, another towards a shipping scene.
His prints also explore the rhythms of the calendar. April, an etching of 1783 from the Twelve Months series, shows fishermen on a bank and in a rowing boat, with a church and windmill behind them. The Rijksmuseum holds a proof made before the sky was worked. Together these works reveal a shared interest in relationships between the organisation of landscape, leisure and everyday labour.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Janson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
