Alessandro Longhi

Born : 1733Died : 1813

Alessandro Longhi worked in Venice as a portrait painter, pursuing a distinct path alongside his father Pietro. He also contributed to the memory of Venetian artists through his Compendio of biographies, published in 1762. His Portrait of Almorò III Alvise Pisani and His Family, painted around 1758, combines the sitter’s relatives with an allegorical figure of Justice, drawing on English models of portraiture.

In the Portrait of Carlo Lodoli, dated around 1761, earthy colours accompany the friar’s Franciscan habit, books and compasses. These objects refer to his architectural interests. Chicago’s Girl with a Dog, dated around 1770, offers another example of the individual portrait: this oil painting on canvas measures approximately sixty-five centimetres in height.

This profile brings together identity references for Alessandro Longhi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
