Franz Ittenbach (1813–1879), born in Königswinter and deceased in Düsseldorf, devoted himself to religious painting. After initial drawing lessons in Cologne, he entered the Düsseldorf Academy in 1832, studying with Theodor Hildebrandt and subsequently Wilhelm von Schadow. A journey to Italy begun in 1839 deepened his knowledge of earlier artistic models.
His images of saints favour restrained gestures, clear drawing and contemplative expressions. He also created monumental decorative schemes, notably at the Apollinariskirche near Remagen, collaborating with Ernst Deger and the Müller brothers. The Virgin Mary in Prayer of 1868 demonstrates the continuity of this approach: a half-length figure stands against a worked gold ground, combining pictorial precision with devotional purpose. Altarpieces, frescoes and devotional paintings thus define his practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Franz Ittenbach and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
