Jan Fris, also known as Johannes Fris, was a Dutch painter active in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. His known production consists almost entirely of still lifes, with dated works ranging from 1647 to 1672. Musical instruments, books and skulls associated with his vanitas paintings place familiar objects within a reflection on the fragility of human existence. Closely related, subtly varied tones characterise this painting, in which assembled things acquire significance beyond their everyday use. Biographical information remains limited, but his marriage in Amsterdam in 1649 and acquisition of citizenship two years later anchor his career in the city. His surviving work consequently provides the principal testimony to his artistic activity and his sustained attention to the world of objects.
