Art and entomology meet in the work of Leopoldo Richter (1896–1984). Trained in mathematics and natural sciences in Germany, he developed his interest in insects through contact with Eduard Handschin in Basel. After several journeys to South America, he settled in Brazil and then Bogotá, where he became an entomologist at the National University. Field research informed an artistic practice encompassing drawings, paintings and ceramics. In his representations of treehoppers, he sought to combine scientific accuracy with artistic quality: the description of insects involved a sustained attention to material and form. He began exhibiting in 1956. His gift of fourteen treehopper paintings to Geneva’s Natural History Museum in 1977 exemplifies this enduring dialogue between observation and creation.
This profile brings together identity references for Leopoldo Richter and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
