Leopold Bode (1831–1906) began studying at the Städel Institute in 1848 with Jakob Becker and Johann David Passavant. From 1851 to 1854 he worked in Eduard von Steinle’s studio, where he became acquainted with Nazarene painting. His subsequent career developed towards Romantic historical and genre subjects.
He collaborated with Steinle on frescoes for Cologne’s Wallraf-Richartz Museum and helped decorate the choir niches of St Mary’s in Aachen. In 1880 he contributed to the decoration of the staircase at Frankfurt’s opera house. His watercolour Die drei seligen Jungfrauen, executed over a pencil drawing and preserved in an old frame inscribed with verses, illustrates his interest in religious and legendary narratives alongside these larger decorative projects.
This profile brings together identity references for Leopold Bode and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
