Leo Putz came from Merano and studied at the Munich Academy, then at the Académie Julian in Paris. A member of the Munich Secession and the Scholle group, he worked in painting, drawing and illustration. By the Pool, painted in 1925 and held by the Lenbachhaus, is a composition on canvas measuring 65 by 58 centimetres. His graphic work also includes a drawn greeting card for New Year 1911.
His career subsequently took him to Brazil, where he taught at the art school in Rio de Janeiro. The Lenbachhaus’s Brazilian Winter, painted on cardboard, bears an inscription locating the work in Rio in July 1929. This small format, measuring 37.5 by 50 centimetres, records a particular place and season within his pictorial practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Leo Putz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
