James Warren Childe was a British portrait painter and miniaturist active in London during the first half of the nineteenth century; he died in 1862. His 1836 portrait of Thomas Slingsby Duncombe, held by the National Portrait Gallery, combines pencil, watercolour and bodycolour on paper. Its inscription gives his address on the Strand. Dress and pose help characterise the radical parliamentarian alongside the rendering of his facial features.
In the 1820 portrait of Georgina Whitmore, wife of Charles Babbage, now at Dudmaston, a blue dress, a red armchair and an opening towards a landscape structure the composition. A miniature of a member of the Grant family, preserved at Westminster School, concentrates more closely on head and shoulders. These works demonstrate several formats within his portrait practice.
