Di Cavalcanti (1897–1976), born and deceased in Rio de Janeiro, was a central figure in Brazilian modernism. He began working as a newspaper illustrator and caricaturist during the 1910s. In 1922 he helped organise São Paulo’s Modern Art Week and designed the catalogue cover, contributing to the event’s visual identity.
A subsequent stay in Paris strengthened his commitment to Brazilian subjects. Popular festivities, workers, musicians and Rio’s nightlife supplied lasting themes for his painting. Female figures occupied an important place in a repertoire attentive to social behaviour and everyday experience. Five Girls from Guaratinguetá, painted in 1930 and preserved at MASP, provides an example of his compositions of figures and his enduring interest in the people around him.
This profile brings together identity references for Di Cavalcanti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
