German photographer Jürgen Klauke, born in Cochem in 1943, placed the body and sexual identity at the heart of his early work in the 1970s, using himself as a model. He studied at the Cologne School of Art and Design from 1964 to 1970. At the time, he portrayed himself as an androgynous figure and developed, according to the source, a critique of a society he considered obsessed with sex but incapable of love.
His photographs, in black and white or colour, often show the figures against a plain background; the source describes this as a simple visual language. His practice also extends to performance. In 1971, his first work, “Me & Me, Daily Drawings and Photo Sessions”, was published; its title brings drawing and photography together. In Paris, an exhibition devoted to his recent works from 1996 to 2001 was presented from 20 June to 2 September 2001 under the title “Jürgen Klauke: The Disaster of the Self”. The source states that he lives in Cologne and teaches at the Academy of Media Arts (Kunsthochschule für Medien).
This profile brings together identity references for Jurgen Klauke and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
