Johannes Bosschaert learned painting from his father, Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, and specialised in flowers and fruit. His Flower Piece with Crown Imperial, signed in 1626 and held by the Centraal Museum, combines luminous colours with carefully smoothed surfaces.
The Nationalmuseum in Stockholm’s Still Life with Tulips offers another arrangement: fifteen tulips grow in soil among insects and a frog. Twelve flowers have striped or flame-like markings. Formerly attributed to Jan Bruegel the Elder, the painting is now assigned to Bosschaert’s body of work. The Basket of Flowers at Dumbarton Oaks, an oil painting on panel dated around 1620, records another form within his floral repertoire. The work belongs to the historic collection of the house at Dumbarton Oaks.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Bosschaert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
