Ross Bleckner, born in New York in 1949, is an American painter. He graduated from New York University in 1971 and the California Institute of the Arts in 1973, emerging prominently within the New York art scene during the 1980s. His paintings investigate memory, loss and the vulnerability of the body, particularly in relation to the AIDS epidemic. A Guggenheim retrospective in 1995 marked an important stage in his career.
His pictures move between abstraction and recognisable imagery: stripes, luminous dots, birds, flowers and cellular forms. Outlines appear to dissolve and motifs shift in and out of focus, suggesting unstable perception. Repeated and recombined across different series, these forms become signs of presence and absence. His work is held by institutions including MoMA and the Whitney Museum.
