Josef Wenglein, also known as Joseph Wenglein, was a Bavarian landscape painter who lived from 1845 to 1919. He trained with Johann Gottfried Steffan and subsequently Adolf Lier, becoming a professor in 1883. Rivers, marshes and changing weather in Upper Bavaria provided subjects for a practice rooted in the Munich tradition of landscape painting.
In Women Gathering Limestone in the Bed of the Isar near Tölz, painted in 1883, the women’s labour takes place among shingle banks and pools reflecting an overcast sky. The painting entered the Bavarian collections that year. Hochmoor in Oberbayern, dated 1889 and also held by the Neue Pinakothek, sets dark water and a dead tree trunk against a break in the clouds that brings light to the distant mountains.
