Joseph Marioni
Born : 1943Documented citizenships : United States
Joseph Marioni (1943–2024), an American artist born in Ohio who died in New York, devoted his painting to colour as luminous presence and pictorial material. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy from 1962 to 1966, then at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1966 to 1970. From 1972, he lived and worked in New York; he received the Berwanger Award in 1997.
The Hengesbach Gallery describes paintings that are often monochromatic in appearance, in which the interaction of translucent layers creates luminous spaces of colour. The edges reveal the interweaving of these layers and, according to the gallery, engage a tactile perception. In the gallery’s presentation, this approach forms part of a modernist conception of painting: its meaning arises from its internal structure rather than from external references. The flow of colour is thus part of a material process, but, according to the same source, also evokes social interactions through the merging and concentration of particles in the fluid medium.
Several presentations have focused on his work as a whole: in 1996, the Wiener Secession devoted an exhibition to his paintings from 1978 to 1995, and in 1998 the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University organised a retrospective covering the period 1970–1998. In 2024, the Kolumba Kunstmuseum in Cologne presented “Für Joseph Marioni”. A work described in a sale notice, “Ohne Titel – Komposition in Gelb (No. 15)”, dates from 1989; executed in acrylic on canvas, it measures 187 × 175.5 cm.
This profile brings together identity references for Joseph Marioni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
