Josef Wittlich, a German painter born in 1903, developed his work from photographs found in magazines. Soldiers, scenes of war, royal families, celebrities and portraits of women provided his principal subjects. He translated these images into paintings with bright, flat areas of colour separated by black outlines. Printed photographs thus became the starting point for a new visual arrangement. His public recognition began in 1967, when Fred Stelzig discovered paintings displayed in the ceramics factory where Wittlich worked. Stelzig organised his first exhibition at the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart that same year. Institutions devoted to Art Brut and modern art, including museums in Lausanne and Paris, hold his work. Wittlich's career combined industrial employment, painting and late recognition. He died in 1982.
This profile brings together identity references for Josef Wittlich and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
