Josef Eberz was a German painter and printmaker associated with Expressionism. He studied under Adolf Hölzel in Stuttgart and spent 1917–1919 in Wiesbaden in the circle of the collector Heinrich Kirchhoff, subsequently working in Darmstadt and Munich. An Italian journey informed the exhibition Das Werk von Assisi at Hans Goltz’s gallery in 1921; the watercolour Assisi is now held by Museum Wiesbaden.
His graphic work employs several processes. Man on His Hands, dated 1919 and held by the Lenbachhaus, combines woodcut and watercolour. The lithograph Paradise, made between 1918 and 1920, appears in an album of the New Munich Secession in the Metropolitan Museum. The Museum of Modern Art also holds Stage, dated 1916, and contributions to art journals. The journals represented include Das Kunstblatt, Die Aktion and Münchner Blätter für Dichtung und Graphik.
This profile brings together identity references for Josef Eberz and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
